ALIOTTI, GIROLAMO. - Benedictine writer, b. at Arezzo in 1412, d. in 1480. Having entered the abbey of S. Flora (1430), in 1437 he became prior of S. Cecilia at Foiano. He went to France in 1440, in the retinue of the apostolic legate Cardinal Zabarella. He was abbot of S. Maria in Mamma (1442) and finally (1446) of the abbey of S. Flora, whose fortunes he restored by affiliating it with the congregation of S. Giustina of Padua.
G. M. Scarmalli published his works under the title: Hieronymi Aliotti Aretini Ordinis sancti Benedicti Abbatis Monasterii SS. Florae et Lucillae epistolae et opuscula, 2 vols., Arezzo 1769. The letters reflect the political and religious life of the period. The principal treatises are ascetic in character: De optimo vivendi genere deligendo; De monachis erudiendis; De felici statu religionis monasticae; Contra Religiosos studium improbantes; De futuro statu Ecclesiae.
