ALLUT, JEAN. - One of the rebel Calvinists of the Cévennes known as Camisards, who were distinguished in the 18th century for their apocalyptic exaltations. A. was properly named Elie Marion and received the nickname Eclaireur for his strange writings, in which the idea of the divine light destined to dispel the darkness of humanity dominates. A. fought in the Cévennes until 1706, when he submitted and withdrew to Geneva. Then he went to Germany, whence, driven out, he took refuge in England, always viewed with disfavor by the religious authorities, who finally condemned him.
