ALMA ROMA. - A monthly periodical published in Rome from January 1913 to October 1942 by the Vatican Printing House. It had been preceded by a similar journal in Latin, Vox Urbis (q.v.), and its director until his death—which also marked the end of the publication—was Giuseppe Fornari, a lay official of the Roman Curia (d. 18 Sept. 1942). The periodical, which bore the subtitle Latinitatis praeconium, was entirely written in Latin, aiming to promote and spread the language of Rome (it carried the living motto: «quidquid non possidet armis religione tenet»). The disciplines covered were highly varied, and a significant portion was devoted to contemporary life and events; there were also numerous essays in poetry. Fornari was joined in collaboration by the best contemporary ecclesiastical Latinists, both Italian and from other countries.
