ALTFRIED (ALTFRIED). – Bishop of Hildesheim from 851 until his death on 15 August 874. He was a Benedictine monk of Corvey (near Minden in Westphalia), and worked under Lodovico il Germanico for the restoration of peace in the kingdom and in the Carolingian dynasty. Promoting the foundation of several abbeys, at his own expense he had the Benedictine abbey at Saleghenstad (perhaps present-day Osterwieck near Halberstadt) and the Benedictine convent at Essen erected. In 872 he consecrated the new cathedral dedicated to Mary in his episcopal city. His tomb is still located in the monastery of Essen.
