AMMAN, JOHANN KONRAD. - Swiss physician, b. in Schaffhausen in 1669, d. in Warmond in 1724. He practiced medicine in Holland, where, finding himself treating a deaf-mute girl, he set out to educate her. Having achieved excellent results, he wished to continue in the art of educating the deaf-mute and published in 1692 the Surdus loquens, in which he treated of the method he had followed. The work was published in Latin at Amsterdam, and in German at Haarlem; and in 1700 it was republished under the new title Dissertatio de loquela (first Italian version by Vittorio Banchi, Siena, 1901).
The method proposed by A. is the oral method, which others too had recommended before him. But he was the first to establish the oral method of educating the deaf-mute on a secure scientific foundation. His work had wide diffusion, bringing decisive progress in the oral education of the deaf-mute. Besides with a secure scientific foundation, A. sets forth with clarity and exactness the practical procedure for teaching articulated speech to the deaf from birth, as the only means of participating in social life, from which he would remain inexorably excluded because of his infirmity.
