AMMAN (AMMON), KASPAR. - Augustinian theologian, b. at Hasselt (Liège) around 1450, d. in 1524. He was a master of theology, prior at Lauingen and provincial of his Order (1500-1503 and 1514-18). Highly skilled in Greek and Hebrew, he corresponded with the leading German Hebraists of the time; a letter of his to Luther dated 26 Oct. 1522 survives. He published a Translation of the Psalms in German from the Hebrew text (Augsburg 1523). He showed sympathies for the innovators, and preached against the bull Exsurge Domine and the Edict of Worms; he was therefore arrested and handed over to the bishop of Augsburg (1523), who released him after a few months (1524). He died shortly afterward, faithful to his vows, according to the opinion that later became established in his Order; but G. Kolde holds the contrary view.
