AMMAN (AMMON), KASPAR. - Augustinian theologian, born in Hasselt (Limburg) around 1450, died in 1524. He was a master of theology, prior at Lauingen, and provincial of his Order (1500-1503 and 1514-18). Extremely skilled in Greek and Hebrew, he corresponded with the leading German Hebraists of his time; one of his letters to Luther, dated 26 October 1522, survives. He published a German translation of the Psalms from the Hebrew text (Augsburg, 1523). He showed sympathy for reformers and preached against the bull *Exsurge Domine* and the Edict of Worms; for this he was arrested and handed over to the bishop of Augsburg (1523), who released him after a few months (1524). He died shortly afterward, faithful to his vows, according to the prevailing opinion in his Order; but G. Koldè held the contrary view.
