Condemning the Errors of Martin Luther
1 BULL AGAINST THE ERRORS OF MARTIN LUTHER AND HIS FOLLOWERS
2 Leo, Bishop, Servant of the Servants of God
3 Arise, O Lord, and judge thy cause, remember thy reproaches, those which are made by the foolish all the day long; incline thine ear to our prayers, for foxes have risen up seeking to destroy the vineyard, whose winepress thou alone hast trodden, and as thou wast about to ascend to the Father, thou didst commit its care, government and administration to Peter as to the head and thy vicar, and to his successors in the manner of the triumphant Church: a boar from the forest strives to lay it waste, and a singular beast seeks to devour it. Arise, Peter, and for the pastoral care aforesaid committed to thee (as is aforesaid) by divine ordinance, attend to the cause of the holy Roman Church, Mother of all churches and teacher of the faith, which thou, at God's command, didst consecrate with thy blood, against which, as thou didst deign to forewarn, there rise up false teachers introducing sects of perdition, bringing upon themselves swift destruction, whose tongue is fire, an unquiet evil, full of deadly poison, who having bitter zeal and contentions in their hearts, glory and lie against the truth. Arise thou also, we beseech thee, Paul, who didst illuminate and illustrate her by thy doctrine and equal martyrdom. For now there rises a new Porphyry; because as he of old unjustly bit the holy Apostles, so this man bites, tears and lacerates the holy Pontiffs, our predecessors, against thy doctrine, not beseeching them but rebuking them, and when he distrusts his cause, he does not fear to resort to abuse, after the manner of heretics, whose (as Jerome says) last refuge is, that when they perceive their causes will be condemned, they begin to spread the venom of the serpent with their tongue; and when they see themselves vanquished, they rush forth into insults. For although thou hast said that heresies ought to be for the exercise of the faithful, yet they must, lest they increase and the little foxes coalesce, be extinguished in their very birth, by thy intercession and aid.
4 Let arise, finally, all the Saints, and the rest of the universal Church, whose true interpretation of the sacred scriptures being set aside, certain ones, whose mind the father of lies has blinded, after the old custom of heretics, being wise in their own eyes, interpret the same scriptures otherwise than the Holy Spirit requires, for the sake of their own ambitious sense and popular favour alone, as the Apostle testifies, nay rather they twist and adulterate them, so that according to Jerome it is now no longer the gospel of Christ, but of man, or what is worse, of the devil. Let arise, I say, the aforesaid holy Church of God, and together with the blessed Apostles aforesaid let her intercede with God almighty, that, the errors of his sheep being purged away, and all heresies being eliminated from the bounds of the faithful, he may deign to preserve peace and unity to his holy Church.
5 For some time now, which we can scarcely express on account of anguish and sorrow of heart, by the report of trustworthy persons and public rumour it has come to our hearing, nay rather, to our sorrow we have seen and read with our own eyes many and various errors, namely some already condemned by Councils and the constitutions of our Predecessors, containing also expressly the heresy of the Greeks and of the Bohemians: others however respectively, either heretical, or false, or scandalous, or offensive to pious ears, or seductive of simple minds, by false worshippers of the faith, who through proud curiosity desiring the glory of the world, against the doctrine of the Apostle wish to be wise beyond what is fitting; whose garrulity (as Jerome says) would have no credence without the authority of scriptures, unless they seemed to support their perverse doctrine also by divine testimonies, though badly interpreted: from whose eyes the fear of God has departed, the enemy of mankind suggesting it, have been newly stirred up, and lately sown among certain lighter persons in the renowned nation of Germany.
6 Which we grieve the more has happened there, because we and our Predecessors have always held that same nation in the bowels of charity. For after the empire was transferred from the Greeks to the Romans in those same Germans, we and the same Predecessors have always received from them advocates and defenders of the same Church; which Germans indeed, true Germans of Catholic truth, it is established have always been most fierce opponents of heresies: of which thing witnesses are those praiseworthy constitutions of the German Emperors for the liberty of the Church, and for expelling and exterminating heretics from all Germany, under the gravest penalties, even the loss of lands and dominions, against receivers or those not expelling them, once issued, and confirmed by our Predecessors, which if they were observed today, both we and they would certainly be free from this trouble. Witness is borne in the Council of Constance to the condemned and punished perfidy of the Hussites and Wiccleffites, as well as of Jerome of Prague.
7 The blood of Germans shed so often against the Bohemians bears witness. Witness is borne finally by the learned, true, and holy refutation, reprobation, and condemnation of the aforesaid errors, or many of them, by the University of Cologne and the University of Louvain, as most pious and most religious cultivators of the Lord's field. We could also allege many other things which, lest we appear to be weaving a history, we have deemed should be passed over. For the sake of the pastoral office enjoined upon us by divine grace, which we bear, we can in no way tolerate or dissimulate further the pestilent virus of the aforesaid errors without injury to the Christian religion and to the orthodox faith. We have deemed it fitting to set forth in the present document some of those errors, the tenor of which follows, and is as follows: —
8 I. It is a heretical opinion, but a common one, that the Sacraments of the new law give justifying grace to those who do not place an obstacle.
9 II. To deny that original sin remains in a child after baptism is to trample upon Paul and Christ at the same time.
10 III. The inclination to sin, even if no actual sin be present, delays the soul departing from the body from entering heaven.
11 IV. Imperfect charity in one about to die necessarily brings with it great fear, which by itself is sufficient to satisfy the punishment of purgatory, and prevents entry into the kingdom.
12 V. That there are three parts of penance, contrition, confession, and satisfaction, is not founded in sacred Scripture, nor in the ancient holy Christian doctors.
13 VI. Contrition, which is prepared through discussion, collection, and detestation of sins, by which one recalls the years of one's life in the bitterness of one's soul, weighing the gravity of sins, their multitude, their foulness, the loss of eternal beatitude, and the acquisition of eternal damnation, this contrition makes one a hypocrite, indeed rather a greater sinner.
14 VII. It is most true, and superior to all doctrine on contritions given hitherto, to do no more henceforth, the highest penance, the best penance, a new life.
15 VIII. In no way presume to confess venial sins, nor even all mortal sins, because it is impossible that you know all mortal sins: hence in the primitive Church only manifest mortal sins were confessed.
16 IX. When we wish to confess all things purely, we do nothing other than to wish to leave nothing to the mercy of God to be forgiven.
17 X. Sins are not remitted to him unless the priest remitting them believes they are remitted to him; indeed the sin would remain unless he believed it remitted; for the remission of sin and the gift of grace are not sufficient, but it is also necessary to believe that it is remitted.
18 XI. In no way trust that you are absolved on account of your contrition, but on account of the word of Christ: "Whatsoever thou shalt loose," etc. Thus, I say, trust, if you have obtained the absolution of the priest, and believe firmly that you are absolved; and you will truly be absolved, whatever be the state of your contrition.
19 XII. If by an impossibility one confessed were not contrite, or the priest absolved not seriously but in jest, if nevertheless he believes himself absolved, he is most truly absolved.
20 XIII. In the sacrament of penance the Pope or bishop does no more in the remission of guilt than the lowest priest; indeed where there is no priest, any Christian does as much, even if she were a woman or a child.
21 XIV. No one ought to answer the priest that he is contrite, nor should the priest require it.
22 XV. It is a great error of those who approach the sacrament of the Eucharist relying on this, that they have confessed, that they are not conscious to themselves of any mortal sin; that they have sent forth their prayers and their preparations; all of these eat and drink to their judgment; but if they believe and trust that they will obtain grace there, this faith alone makes them pure and worthy.
23 XVI. It seems advisable that the Church in a general council should decree that the laity be communicated under both species; nor are the Bohemians communicating under both species heretics, but schismatics.
24 XVII. The treasures of the Church, from which the Pope grants indulgences, are not the merits of Christ and the saints.
25 XVIII. Indulgences are pious frauds of the faithful, and remissions of good burdens, and are among those things which are permitted, and not among those things which are expedient.
26 XIX. Indulgences do not avail for the remission of the penalty due to divine justice for actual sins, to those who truly obtain them.
27 XX. Those who believe indulgences to be salutary and useful for spiritual fruit are deceived.
28 XXI. Indulgences are necessary only for public crimes, and are properly granted only to the hard and impatient.
29 XXII. Indulgences are neither necessary nor useful for six classes of men; namely, the dead or dying, the sick, those legitimately hindered, those who have not committed crimes, those who have committed crimes but not public ones, those who do better works.
30 XXIII. Excommunications are only external penalties, and do not deprive a man of the common spiritual prayers of the Church.
31 XXIV. Christians ought to be taught to love excommunication more than to fear it.
32 XXV. The Roman Pontiff, successor of Peter, is not the vicar of Christ over all the churches of the world instituted by Christ himself in blessed Peter.
33 XXVI. The word of Christ to Peter: "Whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth," etc., extends only to those things bound by Peter himself.
34 XXVII. It is certain that it is not at all in the power of the Church or the Pope to establish articles of faith, nor even laws of morals, or of good works.
35 XXVIII. If the Pope with a great part of the Church should feel thus or thus, and even if he did not err, it is still not a sin or heresy to feel otherwise, especially in a matter not necessary for salvation, until one has been reprobated by a universal Council and the other approved.
36 XXIX. A way has been opened to us of expounding the authority of Councils, and of freely contradicting their acts, and of judging their decrees, and of confidently confessing whatever appears true, whether it has been approved or reprobated by any council.
37 XXX. Some articles of John Huss condemned in the Council of Constance are most Christian, most true and evangelical, which the universal Church could not condemn.
38 XXXI. In every good work the Just man sins.
39 XXXII. A good work most excellently done is a venial sin.
40 XXXIII. To burn heretics is contrary to the will of the Spirit.
41 XXXIV. To make war against the Turks is to resist God visiting our iniquities upon us through them.
42 XXXV. No one is certain that he does not always sin mortally on account of the most hidden vice of pride.
43 XXXVI. Free will after sin is a thing of title only, and while it does what is in itself, it sins mortally.
44 XXXVII. Purgatory cannot be proved from sacred scripture which is in the canon.
45 XXXVIII. Souls in purgatory are not secure of their salvation, at least not all; nor is it proved by any reasons or scriptures that they are outside the state of meriting, or of performing charity.
46 XXXIX. Souls in purgatory sin without ceasing, so long as they seek rest and shrink from punishments.
47 XL. Souls freed from purgatory by the sufferings of the living are less blessed than if they had satisfied for themselves.
48 XLI. Ecclesiastical prelates and secular princes would not do wrong if they abolished all bags of begging.
49 How pestilential these errors are respectively, how pernicious, how scandalous, how seductive of pious and simple minds, and finally how contrary to all charity and to reverence for the holy Roman Church, the mother of all the faithful and teacher of the faith, and to the nerve of ecclesiastical discipline, namely obedience, which is the source and origin of all virtues, without which anyone is easily convicted of infidelity, no one of sound mind is ignorant. We therefore, in these matters, as being most grave, proceed with greater earnestness (as is fitting), and desiring to bar the way against such a plague and cancerous disease, lest it spread further in the Lord's field like a noxious thorn, having held a careful weighing, discussion, and strict examination of the aforesaid errors and each of them, and mature deliberation, and having duly weighed and repeatedly considered all things with our venerable brothers the Cardinals of the holy Roman Church, and the Priors or General Ministers of the regular orders, and many others most learned in sacred theology and in both laws, whether professors or masters, we have found that these same errors respectively (as aforesaid) or articles are not Catholic, nor are to be dogmatized as such, but are contrary to the doctrine of the Catholic Church and its tradition, and to the true interpretation of the divine scriptures received from it, to whose authority Augustine so determined that assent should be given, that he said he would not have believed the Gospel unless the authority of the Catholic Church had intervened. For from these same errors, or from some or several of them, it plainly follows that the same Church, which is governed by the Holy Spirit, errs and has always erred. Which is indeed contrary to that which Christ promised to his disciples at his ascension (as is read in the holy Gospel of Matthew), saying: "Behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world;" and also contrary to the determinations of the holy Fathers, and to the express ordinances and canons of Councils and of the Supreme Pontiffs, to which not to have obeyed has always been, as Cyprian testifies, the fuel and cause of all heresies and schisms.
50 By the counsel and assent therefore of these our venerable brothers, and by the mature deliberation aforesaid of all and each of the aforesaid matters, by the authority of almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of our own, we condemn, reprobate, and utterly reject all and each of the aforesaid articles or errors, as (as is premised) respectively heretical, or scandalous, or false, or offensive to pious ears, or seductive of simple minds, and contrary to Catholic truth, and we decree and declare by this present that they ought to be held by all the faithful of both sexes as condemned, reprobated, and rejected. These errors may neither be defended nor published.
51 Forbidding under pain of major excommunication latae sententiae, and as regards Ecclesiastical and Regular persons, deprivation of all Bishoprics, even Patriarchal, Metropolitan and other Cathedral Churches, as well as Monasteries and Priories even Conventional and of any dignities or Ecclesiastical Benefices, whether Secular or of any Order Regular whatsoever, and incapacity to obtain these and others in the future. Moreover, as regards Convents, Chapters or houses, or pious places of seculars or regulars, even Mendicants, as well as Universities even of general studies of whatsoever privileges granted by the Apostolic See, or its Legates, or otherwise obtained in any manner whatsoever, of whatsoever tenor they may be: as well as the name and power of holding a general study, of reading and interpreting any sciences and faculties, and incapacity to obtain these and others in the future:
52 Also of the office of preaching and loss of the general study and all its privileges. Moreover, as regards seculars, the same excommunication, as well as loss of whatsoever emphyteusis, or of whatsoever fiefs, whether obtained from the Roman Church or otherwise in any manner whatsoever, and also incapacity to obtain these and others in the future. Likewise as regards all and each of those named above, prohibition of ecclesiastical burial and incapacity for all and each legitimate acts, infamy and diffidation and the crime of lèse-majesté, and the penalties expressed in law for heretics and their supporters, which by this very fact and without further declaration all and each of the aforesaid shall incur, if (which God forbid) they act contrary thereto. From which penalties, by virtue of whatsoever faculty and clauses even contained in any confessional forms, under whatsoever forms of words, they cannot be absolved except by the Roman Pontiff or another having faculty from him for this purpose specifically, except in the article of death.
53 To all and each of the faithful of both sexes, whether Lay or Clerical, Secular and of any Order Regular whatsoever, and all other persons of whatsoever status, rank, or condition they may be, and who may shine forth with whatsoever ecclesiastical or worldly dignity, even the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops, Bishops, Prelates of Patriarchal, Metropolitan and other Cathedral, Collegiate and inferior churches, Clerics and other Ecclesiastical persons, Secular and Regular of any Order even Mendicant, Abbots, Priors or Ministers general or particular, Friars or Religious, exempt and non-exempt: also to Universities of Studies Secular and Regular of any Order even Mendicant, as well as to Kings, Emperors, Electors, Princes, Dukes, Marquises, Counts, Barons, Captains, Commanders, Damsels, and all Officials, Judges, Notaries Ecclesiastical and Secular, Communities, Universities, Powers, Cities, Castles, Lands and places, or their or these citizens, inhabitants and dwellers, and any other Ecclesiastical or Regular persons (as aforesaid) throughout the whole world, wheresoever, especially in Germany existing, or to exist in the future, that they presume not to assert, affirm, defend, preach the aforesaid errors, or any of them, and this perverse doctrine, or in any manner whatsoever, publicly or secretly, by any contrived device or pretext, tacitly or expressly, to favor them.
54 Moreover, because the aforesaid errors, and many others, are contained in the pamphlets or writings of Martin Luther, we likewise condemn, disapprove, and utterly reject the said pamphlets and all the writings of the said Martin, or his sermons in Latin or in any other language whatsoever in which the said errors, or any of them, are contained, and we will that they be held as condemned, disapproved, and rejected (as aforesaid), commanding by virtue of holy obedience and under the aforesaid penalties to be incurred by this very fact, all and each of the faithful of both sexes named above, that they presume not to read, assert, preach, praise, print, publish, or defend such writings, pamphlets, sermons, or schedules, or the chapters, errors, or articles contained therein, by themselves or through another or others directly or indirectly, tacitly or expressly, publicly or secretly, or to keep them in their houses or in any other public or private places in any manner whatsoever; but rather that they, immediately after the publication of these letters, wherever they may be found, be diligently sought out by the ordinaries and others aforesaid, and publicly and solemnly burned in the presence of the clergy and people under all and each of the aforesaid penalties.
55 As for Martin himself, (good God) what did we omit, what did we not do, what paternal charity did we leave undone, in order to recall him from such errors? For after we cited him, wishing to proceed with him more mildly, we invited him, and both through various treatises conducted with our legate and through our letters we exhorted him to depart from the aforesaid errors, or even with a safe conduct offered and money necessary for the journey, without any fear or dread which perfect charity ought to cast out, to come and speak not in secret but openly and to the face, after the example of our Saviour and the Apostle Paul. Which if he had done, for certain (as we judge) returning to his senses he would have recognized his errors, nor would he have found so many faults in the Roman curia, which he vituperates by attributing to it more than was fitting vain rumors of malevolent men, nor in the holy Roman Pontiffs, whom he injures beyond all moderation, in their canons or constitutions which he strives to bite; we would have taught him as clear as light that they never erred, because according to the prophet, neither in Gilead is there no balm, nor is there no physician. But he always disobeyed, and spurning all and singular the aforesaid things, he contemned to come at the aforesaid citation, and even to the present day contumacious and hardened in mind he has endured censures beyond a year; and what is worse, adding evils to evils, having knowledge of this citation, he burst forth into the voice of rash appeal to a future council against the constitution of Pius the Second and Julius the Second, our predecessors, by which it is provided that those appealing in such manner are to be punished with the penalty of heretics (he also vainly implored the aid of the Council, which openly professes not to believe him); so that against him as one notoriously suspect concerning the faith, indeed truly a heretic, without further citation or delay we could proceed to his condemnation and damnation as a heretic, and to the severity of all and singular the aforesaid penalties and censures.
56 Nevertheless by the counsel of our aforesaid brothers, imitating the clemency of almighty God, who wills not the death of the sinner, but rather that he be converted and live, forgetting all injuries hitherto inflicted upon us and the Apostolic See, we have decreed to use all the piety we can, and to do, as far as in us lies, that by the path of gentleness proposed he may return to his senses and depart from the aforesaid errors, so that we may benignly receive him as that prodigal son returning to the bosom of the Church. Him therefore, Martin, and whosoever adhere to him, and his receivers and supporters, through the bowels of the mercy of our God, and through the sprinkling of the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom and through whom the redemption of mankind and the building up of holy mother Church has been made, we exhort and beseech with our whole heart, that they cease to disturb the peace, unity and truth of that Church itself, for which the Saviour himself prayed so earnestly to the Father, and that they wholly abstain from the aforesaid so pernicious errors, and they shall find in us, if they obey effectually and shall have certified us of their obedience through legitimate documents, the affection of paternal charity and an open fountain of gentleness and clemency.
57 Nevertheless we inhibit the same Martin from now on, that in the meantime he cease altogether from all preaching or the office of preaching. Otherwise, if perchance the love of justice and virtue does not restrain Martin himself from sin, and the hope of indulgence does not lead him to penance, let the terror of penalties coerce him with discipline: we require the same Martin and his adhering accomplices, supporters, and receivers, and admonish them in virtue of holy obedience, under all and singular the aforesaid penalties to be incurred by that very fact, strictly commanding by the tenor of these presents, that within sixty days, of which we assign twenty for the first, twenty for the second, and the remaining twenty days for the third and peremptory term, to be numbered immediately following the affixing of these presents in the places written below, the same Martin, accomplices, supporters, adherents, and receivers aforesaid shall altogether desist from the aforesaid errors and their preaching, publication and assertion, and also from the defense and edition of books or writings concerning the same or any of them, and shall burn or cause to be burned all books and writings, one and all, containing the aforesaid errors or any of them in any manner whatsoever. And the same Martin shall altogether revoke these errors and assertions, and concerning this revocation through public documents valid in the form of law to be consigned into the hands of two Prelates to be transmitted to us within another similar sixty days, or by himself (if he should wish to come to us, which would be more pleasing) with the aforesaid most full safe conduct, which we now grant, to be brought, shall certify us, so that no scruple of doubt may be able to remain concerning his true obedience.
58 But if (which God forbid) the aforesaid Martin, his accomplices, supporters, adherents and harbourers should act otherwise, or should not fulfil all and singular of the aforesaid matters within the aforesaid term with effect, imitating the doctrine of the Apostles, who taught that a heretical man should be avoided after the first and second correction, from now as from then, and conversely, we declare by this same authority that the aforesaid Martin, his accomplices, adherents, supporters and harbourers and each of them, as dry branches not remaining in Christ, but dogmatizing doctrine contrary to the Catholic faith, or scandalous or condemned, to no small offence of divine majesty and to the detriment and scandal of the universal Church and the Catholic faith, and vilifying the keys of the Church, have been and are notorious and obstinate heretics, and we condemn them as such by this present document, and we will and command that they be held as such by all the faithful of Christ of both sexes aforesaid. And we subject all and singular of them to all the aforesaid and other penalties inflicted by law against such persons by the tenor of these presents, and we decree and declare that they have been and are ensnared by the same.
59 We further prohibit, under all and singular the aforesaid penalties to be incurred by that very fact, all and singular the faithful of Christ named above, lest they presume in any way to read, assert, preach, praise, print, publish or defend, by themselves or through another or others, directly or indirectly, tacitly or expressly, publicly or secretly, or in their houses or in other public or private places, the writings composed or published by the same Martin in any manner whatsoever, even those not containing the aforesaid errors, as from a man hostile to the orthodox faith, and therefore greatly suspect, and so that his memory may be entirely blotted out from the fellowship of the faithful; rather, let them burn those writings, as aforesaid.
60 We further admonish all and singular the faithful of Christ aforesaid, under the same penalty of excommunication incurred by the very fact, that they avoid the heretics thus declared and condemned, not obeying our mandates, after the lapse of the aforesaid term, and cause them to be avoided as far as in them lies, and that they have no commerce or any conversation or communion with the same or with any of them, nor minister to them necessaries.
61 For the greater confusion moreover of the aforesaid Martin and his accomplices, supporters and adherents and harbourers thus declared heretics and condemned after the lapse of the aforesaid term, we command all and singular the faithful of Christ of both sexes, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, Prelates of Patriarchal, Metropolitan and other cathedral, collegiate and inferior churches, Chapters, and other ecclesiastical persons, secular and regular of whatsoever Orders, even Mendicant (especially of that congregation of which the aforesaid Martin is professed and in which he is said to dwell or remain), exempt and non-exempt, as well as all and singular princes, shining with whatsoever ecclesiastical or worldly dignity, Kings, Electors of the Emperor, Dukes, Marquises, Counts, Barons, Captains, Commanders, Damsels, Communities, Universities, Powers, Cities, Lands, Castles and places, or their inhabitants, citizens and dwellers, and all others and singular aforesaid throughout the whole world, especially those constituted in the same Germany, that under all and singular the aforesaid penalties, they or any of them shall personally seize the aforesaid Martin, his accomplices, adherents, harbourers and supporters and, once seized, shall retain them at our instance and send them to us: being about to receive from us and the Apostolic See recompense and a fitting reward for so good a work, or at least all and singular of them, from the Metropolitan, Cathedral, Collegiate and other churches, houses, Monasteries, Convents, Cities, Domains, Universities, Communities, Castles, Lands and places respectively, both clergy and regulars and laity all and singular aforesaid, shall expel them entirely.
62 Cities moreover, Domains, Lands, Castles, Villas, Counties, Fortifications, Towns and places of whatsoever kind existing anywhere, and their respective Metropolitan, Cathedral, Collegiate and other Churches, Monasteries, Priories, Houses, Convents and religious or pious places of whatsoever order (as aforesaid) to which it should happen that the aforesaid Martin or any of the aforesaid should resort, so long as they remain there and for three days after their departure, we subject to ecclesiastical interdict.
63 And that the foregoing may be made known to all, we further command all Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, Prelates of Patriarchal, Metropolitan and other cathedral and collegiate churches, Chapters and other ecclesiastical persons, secular and of whatever Orders aforesaid regular, religious brothers, monks exempt and non-exempt aforesaid, wherever situated, especially those constituted in Germany, that they or any one of them, under like censures and penalties to be incurred ipso facto, shall publicly declare and cause to be declared, and shall command to be declared by others and to be avoided by all, Martin and all and each of the aforesaid who within the elapsed time of this our mandate or monition shall not have obeyed, as heretics and condemned in their churches, on Sundays and other festival days, when a greater multitude of the people shall have assembled for divine worship. Likewise to all Christ's faithful that they avoid them, in like manner under the aforesaid censures and penalties. And they shall cause these present letters or a copy thereof made in the form set forth below to be read, published and affixed in their churches, monasteries, houses, convents and other places. We also excommunicate and anathematize all and each of whatever status, grade, condition, pre-eminence, dignity or excellence they may be, who shall have done or in any way procured, by themselves or another or others, publicly or secretly, directly or indirectly, tacitly or expressly, that these present letters or copies, transcripts or exemplars thereof may not be read, affixed and published in their lands and dominions.
64 Finally, since it would be difficult for these present letters to be carried to each and every place where it would be necessary, we will and by apostolic authority decree that transcripts thereof made by the hand of a public notary and subscribed, or printed in the Eternal City and furnished with the seal of some ecclesiastical Prelate, shall be accepted everywhere and full faith shall be given to them, just as would be given to the original letters, if they were exhibited or shown.
65 And lest the aforesaid Martin and all others aforesaid, whom these present letters concern in any way, be able to pretend ignorance of the same letters and of all and each of the things contained therein, we will that the letters themselves be affixed and published on the doors of the Basilica of the Prince of the Apostles and of the Apostolic Chancery, as well as of the Cathedral churches of Brandenburg, Meissen and Merseburg, decreeing that such publication of the same letters shall bind the aforesaid Martin and all others and each of the aforesaid, whom these letters concern in any way, just as if the letters themselves had been personally read and intimated to them on the day of such affixing and publication, since it is not likely that those things which are done so openly ought to remain unknown to them.
66 Notwithstanding apostolic constitutions and ordinances, or if to all and each of the aforesaid or to any of them or to any others whatsoever from the Apostolic See aforesaid, or from those having power from it under any form whatsoever, even confessional and with any even the strongest clauses, or for any cause or great consideration, there has been granted or conceded that they cannot be interdicted, suspended or excommunicated by Apostolic letters not making full and express mention, word for word and not by general clauses importing the same, of such indult, the tenor, causes and forms of the same indult being treated just as if they were inserted word for word, so that it be altogether voided, these present having it for expressed.
67 Let no one whatsoever infringe this page of our condemnation, reprobation, rejection, decree, declaration, inhibition, will, mandate, exhortation, entreaty, requisition, monition, assignment, concession, condemnation, subjection, excommunication and anathematization, or dare to contradict it with rash presumption. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of Almighty God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul His.

1 BULLA CONTRA ERRORES MARTINI LUTHERI ET SEQUACIUM
2 Leo Episcopus Servus Servorum Dei
13 VI. Contritio, quae paratus per discussionem, collectionem, et deteststionem peccatorum, qua quis recogitat annos suos in amaritudine animae suae, ponderando peccatorum gravitatem, multitudinem, foeditatem, amissionem aeternae beatitudinis, ac aeternae damnationis acquisitionem, haec contritio facit hypocritam, immo magis peccatorem.
14 VII.
29 XXII. Sex generibus hominum indulgentiae nec sunt necessariae, nec utiles; videlicet mortuis seu morituris, infirmis, legitime impeditis, his qui non commiserunt crimina, his qui crimina commiserunt, sed non publica, his qui meliora operantur.
30 XXIII.
38 XXXI. In omni opere bono Justus peccat.
39 XXXII. Opus bonum optime factum veniale est peccatum.
40 XXXIII. Haereticos comburi est contra voluntatem Spiritûs.
41 XXXIV.

38 XXXI. In ogni opera buona il Giusto pecca.
39 XXXII. Un'opera buona ottimamente compiuta è peccato veniale.
40 XXXIII.
