AMOS, DIOCESE OF. - In the province of Quebec (Canada), a suffragan of Quebec. Established as a parish in 1915 in Abitibi, a colonization territory in northern Quebec, A. was elevated to a diocese on 3 Dec. 1938 and comprises the southern part of the diocese of Haileybury (Ontario), from which it was separated and which, after 10 Dec. 1938, bears the name of Timmins (Ontario). There are 55,959 Catholics out of a total population of 59,736; 64 parishes; and 98 diocesan priests.
