AMOS, DIOCESE of. — In the province of Québec (Canada), suffragan of Québec. Established as a parish in 1915 in Abitibi, a colonization territory in the north of the province of Québec, A. was raised to the status of a diocese on 3 December 1938 and comprises the southern part of the diocese of Haileybury (Ontario), from which it was separated and which, after 10 December 1938, bears the name of Timmins (Ontario). There are 55,959 Catholics out of a total population of 59,736; 64 parishes and 98 diocesan priests.
