ANAGNOST (Ἀναγνώστης: «Reader»). - In the Eastern Church it is the cleric who reads the Holy Scriptures aloud in religious assemblies. In ancient times he could also preach and teach Christian doctrine, principally to the young. The rite of promotion of a cleric to the rank of anagnostes is performed outside the sacred liturgy.
