ANADOCUS (Ὁ Ἀνάδοχος = «Guarantor»). - In the Byzantineliturgy it is the equivalent of godparent. His presence is required at Baptism, whereas for Confirmation there is no mention of it, because Confirmation is administered by the priest together with Baptism. We also find the godparent at the ceremony of the tonsure of children, proper to that rite, and at the blessing of a woman 40 days after childbirth. By analogy of monastic profession with Baptism, the novice who pronounces vows must have his anadochos.
Finally, we also find the anadochos (ὁ σύντεχνος) at betrothal and marriage. At all these rites he must take an active part, and not remain a mere spectator. Let us note the involvement of the godmother also in the profession of nuns.
