APOLLINARE della Concezione (da Conceição). — A Portuguese Franciscan tertiary and ascetical writer. Born in Lisbon on 23 July 1692, he died there in the earthquake of 1 November 1755. He received the habit at São Paulo (Brazil) in 1711 and remained a layman.
His works on Franciscan history, lacking literary merit, nevertheless provide a rich harvest of information: *Pequeños na terra, grandes no ceo* (in 3 parts: Lisbon 1732, 1735, 1738), on saintly Franciscan tertiaries; he also published a survey of saintly Franciscan religious in America (ibid. 1733) and of illustrious Franciscans in every branch (ibid. 1736), as well as a *Claustro francescano eretto no dominio da Coroa Portuguesa* (ibid. 1749, a historical-statistical exposition). Of his edifying writings only two were published: *Viagem devota e feliz* (ibid. 1737), ascetical dialogues, and *Instruções sulla regola di s. Francesco* (ibid. 1740).
