APOLLINARE della CONCEZIONE (da Conceição). - Portuguese Franciscan, historian, and ascetical writer. B. in Lisbon on 23 July 1692; d. there in the earthquake of 1 Nov. 1755. He took the habit at S. Paolo (Brazil) in 1711 and remained a lay brother.
His works on Franciscan history, of no literary value, offer an abundant wealth of information: Pequeños na terra, grandes no ceo (in 3 parts: Lisbon 1732, 1735, 1738), on holy Franciscan lay brothers; he also published a survey of Franciscan religious saints in America (there 1733) and of distinguished Franciscans in every branch (there 1736), as well as a Claustro francescano erecto no dominio da Corôa Portugueza (there 1749, a historical-statistical account). Of his edifying writings only two were published: Viagem devota e feliz (there 1737), ascetical dialogues, and Instruções on the rule of s. Francesco (there 1740).
