APOLLONIO, ANTIMONTANISTA

APOLLONIUS, ANTIMONTANIST. - News of him is preserved by Eusebius (Hist. eccl., V, 18), from whose citations we learn that he was writing about 40 years after the appearance of the heresy, therefore around 215. He must have been Asian or Phrygian. In an energetic and vehement style he inveighs against the prophecies of the Montanist prophetesses and the private life of the leaders of the sect. According to Jerome (De viris inlustribus, 40 and 53) he was especially attacked by Tertullian in book VII of his work On Ecstasy, which has been lost.
