APOLLONIUS, ANTI-MONTANIST. — Information about him is preserved by Eusebius (Hist. eccl., V, 18), from whose quotations we learn that he wrote about 40 years after the appearance of the heresy, thus around 215. He must have been from Asia or Phrygia. In an energetic and vehement style, he inveighs against the prophecies of the Montanist prophetesses and the private life of the sect leaders. According to Jerome (De viris inlustribus, 40 and 53), he was particularly attacked by Tertullian in Book VII of his work On Ecstasy, which has been lost.
