APOLLONIUS, ANTIMONTA-NIST. — A notice of him is preserved by Eusebius (Hist. eccl., V, 18), from whose citations we learn that he wrote about 40 years after the appearance of the heresy, thus around 215. He must have been Asiatic or Phrygian. In energetic and vehement style he attacks the prophecies of the Montanist prophetesses and the private life of the sect leaders. According to Jerome (De viris inlustribus, 40 and 53) he was especially attacked by Tertullian in book VII of his work On Ecstasy, now lost.
