ARAÚJO, FRANCESCO. - Dominican theologian, b. at Verin (Spain) in 1580, d. at Madrid in 1664. He was a lecturer at the University of Salamanca (1617-37), then bishop of Segovia. He spent his last years in a convent in Madrid.

His commentaries on the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas were highly esteemed. In the controversy over predestination and free will, it is by now proven that he adheres to the thought of St. Thomas.

Works: Variae et selectae decisiones morales ad statum ecclesiasticum et civilem pertinentes (Lyons 1564, 1745); Commentarii in universum Aristot. Metaphysicam (Salamanca 1617); Opuscula tripartita (Douay 1633); Commentarii in Summam s. Thomae, 7 vols. (Salamanca 1635-47).
