ARCAMONE (ARCHEMONE), IGNAZIO. — Jesuit missionary, born in Bari around 1615, died at Rachol on 30 April 1683. He entered the novitiate in Naples in 1631, departed for the East Indies in 1644, and worked for more than twenty years on the peninsula of Salsette.
In the Konkani language he composed a treatise on purgatory (1663) and a series of explanations of the Sunday Gospels for the entire year (1664). There remained in manuscript a De Salvetana peninsula commentarius (Rome, National Library) and an important Ianua indica, sive pro concamina et decamina linguis manuale (grammar and vocabulary; in the National Library of Lisbon).
