ARPI. - A city, seat of an ancient bishopric, in Apulia (Virgil's Argyripa, Aen., XI, 246) in the center of the plain south of the Gargano, 20 miles from the sea and 8 km from Foggia; now disappeared. The diocese, suffragan of Siponto, disappears after 314, transferred, it seems, to Siponto, or rather united or transferred to Lucera. It is to be considered that St. Pardo, bishop of A. in 314, buried at Lucera, is the St. Pardo, bishop venerated in Apulia as a citizen of the Peloponnese.
