ARPI. – City and seat of an ancient bishopric in Apulia (Virgil’s Argyripa, Aen., XI, 246), in the middle of the plain south of the Gargano, 20 miles from the sea and 8 km from Foggia; now vanished. The diocese, a suffragan of Siponto, disappeared after 314, apparently transferred to Siponto, or rather united with or transferred to Lucera. It should be held that s. Pardo, bishop of A. in 314 and buried at Lucera, is the s. Pardo bishop venerated in Apulia as a native of the Peloponnese.
