ARPE, GIACOMO. - Augustinian, born at Levanto around 1660, died in 1729. He entered the Order at Genoa in 1675. As soon as he had completed his studies, he was entrusted with the teaching of philosophy and theology. He subsequently governed his religious Congregation for a long time; he was also theologian to the Genoese republic and consultant to the Holy Office.
As historian of the Order, he laboured greatly to disseminate its records and illuminate its glories. This was the aim of his works: Memorie dell'Ordine Eremitano di s. Agostino (Bologna 1699); Pantheon Augustinianum (Genova 1709); Giornale dei santi e beati Agostiniani (Genova 1722); Memorie di beati Agostiniani. He also wrote: Summa totius Theologiae Aegidii Columnae: 5 volumes in 12mo (Bologna-Genova 1704). He was also a distinguished Latin poet.
