ASTER OR ASTERISK (Ὁ Ἀστήρ. Ὁ Ἀστερίσκος). - It is an instrument made of two metal plates, bent into a semicircle, crossed and sometimes fixed at the crossing point to a star-shaped block. In the Byzantine liturgy it serves to protect the particles of bread from contact with the veil that covers the disk, and it is placed upon it during the preparation of the oblations. The a. is removed a few moments before the consecration. The Copts and the Catholic Syrians also make use of it.
