Athleta Christi Nobilis

"ATHLETA CHRISTI NOBILIS". - Hymn of Matins for the feast of St. Venantius martyr, by an unknown author. It was inserted into the breviary in 1670 by Clement X, formerly bishop of Camerino. It is entirely a narration of the legendary deeds of the martyr of Camerino, recounted without a breath of poetry. Having spurned the pagan idols, Venantius is bound with harsh ropes and hurled into a ravine; to quench the thirst of the persecutors he makes living water gush from a rock. The last stanza, before the final doxology, is a prayer to the martyr to implore the living water of divine grace.
