BALDINOTTI, GIULIANO

BALDINOTTI, GIULIANO. - Missionary, b. at Pistoia in 1591, he entered the Society of Jesus in Rome in 1609 and left for the Far East in 1621. He was the first Jesuit to visit Tonkin (March–Aug. 1616), where he had been sent to prepare the mission, begun in the same year by Father Alessandro de Rhodes. His Relatione del Viaggio del Tonchino (Macao, 12 Nov. 1626) was printed in the Lettere dell'Etiopia dell'anno 1626... e della Cina dell'anno 1625 (Rome 1629), pp. 121–33, and in other similar collections. He was about to depart for Japan when he died at Macao in 1631.
