BALLY (BAILLY), PHILIBERT-ALBERT. – Theologian, born at Grésy-sur-Aire (Savoy) in 1605, died at Aosta in 1691. Secretary to the Duke of Savoy Vittorio Amedeo I, he left the court to enter the Barnabites at Thonon in 1632. He preached with considerable success against the Calvinists in Béarn and was subsequently superior of the Barnabite house in Paris (1647), where he preached before Louis XIV. Having become bishop of Aosta in 1659, he was a zealous pastor and a determined opponent of the Jansenists.
He left panegyrics, pastoral letters (3 vols., plus several separate ones), and brief ascetical treatises in a Salesian vein: Traité sur l'oraison (Chambéry 1680); Traité de la véritable dévotion (Aosta 1684); Traité sur la Meme (there 1685).
