BARRETO, FRANCISCO

FRANCISCO BARRETO. — Portuguese missionary, Jesuit, b. at Monteméor-o-novo in 1599. Having gone to the Indies, he was professor of philosophy and theology there, rector at Coulam and at Cochin, then provincial of Malabar (1656–59), and died as visitor of the Indies on 24 Oct. 1664. Coming to Rome as procurator of the mission (1644–53), he published there a Relazione delle Missioni che appartengono alla Provincia di Malavar della Compagnia di Gesù (Rome 1645, several times reprinted and translated).
