BARRETT, JEAN ARNOLD. - Bishop, b. at Looz on 22 February 1770, d. at Namur in 1835. Having completed his studies in Rome and been ordained a priest, he returned to his homeland, beginning his ecclesiastical career as curate of the parish of Wellen. From 1797 to 1802, not having taken the oath to the constitution, he lived in retirement at Liège, where, after the concordat, he was assigned the administration of the property of the cathedral. Once again, in 1811, because of his openly hostile attitude toward Napoleonic policy, he had to withdraw into exile at Besançon. There he carried on his work of assistance to prisoners and the sick, giving fresh proof of his profound Catholic faith and of his conscience as a priest. Having returned to Liège in 1813, he became vicar capitular of the vast diocese and finally bishop of Namur from 1833 to 1835.
