BAGLIN, MICHEL. - General of the Carthusians, born at Château-Gontier on 15 November 1839, died at Pisa on 20 January 1922. Ordained priest in 1862, he professed as a Carthusian in 1883, became vicar at the Valbonne Charterhouse in 1888, and prior of the Grande Chartreuse and General of the Order on 14 October 1892. A learned and elegant writer in Latin, a religious zealous and firm in his convictions, he and his monks became victims of the seventh suppression law of 1901, by which the French Chamber decreed the dispersal of the ancient and meritorious Order. After writing at Easter 1903 a noble and proud letter to Combes, a letter that received wide resonance in the French press, B. and the monks were driven out at gunpoint from the Grande Chartreuse on 29 April of that year, later emigrating to Italy and reviving with their virtue and wisdom the Charterhouse of Lucca.
