BAGLIN, MICHEL. - Prior General of the Carthusians, b. at Château-Gontier on 15 Nov. 1839, d. at Pisa on 20 Jan. 1922. A priest in 1862, a professed Carthusian in 1883, vicar at the charterhouse of Valbonne in 1888, prior of the Grande-Chartreuse and General of the Order on 14 Oct. 1892. A learned and elegant cultivator of the Latin language, a religious full of zeal and firmness, he was, together with his monks, a victim of the sectarian law of suppression of 1901, on the basis of which the French Chamber decreed the dispersal of the ancient and meritorious Order. After writing at Easter 1903 a noble and proud letter to Combes, a letter that had wide resonance in the French press, B. and the monks were driven out by armed force from the Grande Chartreuse on 29 Apr. of that year, afterwards emigrating to Italy and causing the charterhouse of Lucca to flourish through their virtue and their wisdom.
