BARRIO Y FERNÁNDEZ, MARIANO. — Cardinal, born in Jaca on 21 November 1805, died in Valencia on 26 November 1876. Professor of canon law at the University of Huesca, he was appointed bishop of Cartagena-Murcia in 1847 and archbishop of Valencia in 1861. He proved an active defender of the interests of his country and a fervent defender of the rights of Catholics and the papacy. He protested against the oath imposed on the clergy by the constitution of 1869 until Rome itself accepted it, albeit officially. His letter on La unidad católica, written following the constitution of 1876, which approved freedom of worship, is also well known. Pius IX created him a cardinal on 22 December 1874.
