VINCENZO BASILE. – Jesuit missionary in Dalmatia, born in Siculiana (Agrigento) on 29 December 1811 and died in Palermo on 3 March 1882. He entered the Society in 1827 and was assigned as superior to the new mission being attempted in Albania (1841–43), but when the establishment of a small seminary in Shkodër provoked the Turks, it became necessary to withdraw, and Father B. went to Dalmatia and Herzegovina. He was superior of the mission at Trebinje (1850–1852), then of the Illyrian-Dalmatian mission (1852–59). In 1855 he was appointed by the Congregation of Propaganda Fide as apostolic visitor of the dioceses of Trebinje and Mrkan.
His interesting report to the Congregation was published by M. Papac, *Trebinjska biskupija sredinom XIX stoljeća po izvješću apostolskog vizitatora o. Vinka Basila D. I.*, in *Vrela i prinosi*, 8 (Sarajevo 1938), pp. 83–102. A good linguist, he translated into Slovene the *Pensaci bene* of Father Baudrand (Rome 1844), published a prayer book in Albanian (ibid. 1845), another in Slovene (Verona 1864), and also in Slovene meditations with prayers by Father A. Kanizlić (Rome 1865). In 1859 he had returned to his Sicilian province, but from 1862 to 1872 he resumed work among the Slavs of Austria and Dalmatia.
