BARRADAS, SEBASTIÃO. – Portuguese Jesuit, born in Lisbon in 1542, entered the novitiate there (1558), died in Coimbra on 14 April 1615. Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Universities of Coimbra and Evora, he subsequently devoted himself to preaching, which he practised throughout the kingdom with uncommon zeal and success.
He published two biblical commentaries, intended chiefly for preachers: Commentaria in concordiam et historiam evangelicam (I, Coimbra 1599; complete ed. in 4 vols., Mainz 1601–12; 13 reprints); Itinerarium filiorum Israël ex Aegypto in terram repromissionis (Lyons 1620; 5 reprints); this second work on the Exodus was added as vol. V to the Mainz 1627 and Augsburg 1643 editions of the Commentary on the Gospel.
