BASTI. — Diocese of Roman, Visigothic, and Mozarabic Spain, today Baza, in the civil province of Granada. The first known bishop, Eutychianus, attended the Council of Illiberis (Elvira, 300–303). The last, Giovanni, was living in 862. After the city was reconquered (1489), Innocent VIII granted permission to restore the diocese, but Cardinal P. González de Mendoza, who administered it until 21 May 1492, established there only a collegiate church, placing it under Granada. It subsequently Guadix (v.) to which it was united. Today it is an archpriesthood.
