BOROVIKOVSKIY, VLADIMIR LUKIČ. - Painter, b. in 1727 at Mirgorod (Ukraine), d. in 1825 at St. Petersburg. Once a pupil of Levitzky, he then trained particularly on the art of Roslin and of Voilles, and even more on that of Lampi, from whom he inherited the pathetic tendencies proper to Romanticism.
His portraits were much celebrated by the fashion of the time; in one of them he portrayed the Empress Catherine II, in the act of walking in the park of Tsarskoye Selo. His style calls to mind many French and Italian painters of that age. At the end of his life, thanks to a strong spiritual crisis, he devoted all his activity to strictly religious subjects (church of St. Joseph at Mogilev: convent of Torsök, in the governorate of Tver, 1795). In 1794 he was appointed an ordinary member of the Academy of St. Petersburg.
