Nesterov, Michele

NESTEROV, MICHELE. - Russian painter, b. in 1862 at Ufa, d. in the early years of the 20th century. He was influenced by Perov and Kramskoj. He made his debut with the "Wanderers" (Peredvizhniki).

He travelled in Italy and France, studying in particular the paintings of Fra Angelico and those of Puvis de Chavannes. He was chosen together with Vasnetsov and Svedomskij for the decoration of the cathedral of St. Vladimir in Kiev, which lasted from 1885 to 1895. N. painted there the four iconostases, two altarpieces, the choir and the scene of the Resurrection of Christ, revealing a rare temper of mystic and poet. He was the painter of the convents of holy Russia. Besides being a faithful interpreter of life and of religious feeling, he was also a skilled landscape painter.
