NESTEROV, MICHELE. – Russian painter, born in 1862 in Ufa, died in the early years of the 20th century. He was influenced by Perov and Kramskoj. He made his debut with the «Espositori ambulanti».
He travelled in Italy and France, studying particularly the paintings of Beato Angelico and those of Puvis de Chavannes. He was chosen, together with Vasnetsov and Svedomskij, to decorate the cathedral of S. Vladimiro in Kiev; the work lasted from 1885 to 1895. There N. painted the four iconostases, two altar paintings, the choir, and the scene of the Resurrection of Christ, revealing a rare temperament as a mystic and poet. He was the painter of the convents of holy Russia. Besides being a faithful interpreter of religious life and feeling, he was also a skilled landscape painter.
