MICHAEL NESTEROV. — Russian painter, b. in 1862 at Ufa, d. in the early years of the 20th century. He was influenced by Perov and Kramskoy. He made his debut with the "Itinerant Exhibitors."
He traveled in Italy and France, studying particularly the paintings of the Blessed Angelico and those of Puvis de Chavannes. He was chosen, together with Vansetzov and Svedomskij, to decorate the cathedral of St Vladimir in Kiev, which lasted from 1885 to 1895. There he painted the four iconostases, two altarpieces, the choir, and the scene of the Resurrection of Christ, revealing a rare temperament of mystic and poet. He was the painter of the convents of holy Russia. Besides being a faithful interpreter of religious life and sentiment, he was also a skilled landscapist.
