BEBO of BAMBERG. — Deacon of the 11th century, probably a member of the celebrated “Schola Bambergens” founded by St. Emperor Henry. Present at the solemn meeting between Pope Benedict VIII and Henry at Bamberg (1020), he received from the latter at the beginning of 1021 the Expositiones of St. Jerome on Isaiah and the last eight books of the Moralia of St. Gregory the Great.
To the Expositiones he prefixed a letter (“Divo Henrico claritate virtutum clarissimo augustorum B. suus”), in which, among other things, he defends the prerogatives of deacons and expounds the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, then adding two poems addressed to the emperor. To the Moralia he appended another, shorter letter (“Ecce partem Moralioum quam petisti, Caesar, tibi carissime tribuo”). These letters are found in the MSS Bamberg B IV 18, fol. 1–7, and Bamberg B V 6, fol. 172b, and are printed in S. Hirsch, Jahrbücher des Deutschen Reiches unter Heinrich II, I (Leipzig 1862), pp. 547–53.
