BEBO OF BAMBERG. - A deacon of the 11th century, probably a member of the famous "Schola Bambergensis" founded by St. Henry the Emperor. Present at the solemn meeting between Pope Benedict VIII and Henry II at Bamberg (1020), he received from the latter the task of transcribing ancient works. In 1021 he sent him the Expositiones S. Hieronymi in Isaiam and the last eight books of the Moralia of St. Gregory the Great.
To the Expositiones he prefixed a letter "D' Divo Henrico claritate virtutum clarissimo augustorum B. suus", in which, among other things, he defends the attributions of the deacons and sets out the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, adding thereafter two poems addressed to the emperor. To the Moralia he appended another, shorter letter ("Ecce partem Moralium quam petisti, Caesar, tibi carissime tribue"). These letters are found in the codices Bamberg, B IV 18, fols. 1-7, and Bamberg, B V 6, fol. 172b, and are printed in S. Hirsch, Jahrbücher des Deutschen Reiches unter Heinrich II, I (Leipzig 1862), pp. 547-53.
