BOTO di PRÜFENING. - A twelfth-century Benedictine of Prüfening (Regensburg), subsequently identified, as a result of a false reading (Prumensis), with a supposed namesake confrère of Prüm (Trier). He distinguished himself as a copyist of manuscripts and as the author of various works; two of these are in the Maxima Bibliotheca Patrum Lugdunensis (XXI [1677], pp. 489-516): De statu domus Dei libri quinque, an appeal to Eugenio III for a reform of the Church «secundum exemplar Coelestium» (ibid., p. 489), and for the restoration of peace disturbed by external and internal enemies; and De magna domo sapientiae: creation, the economy of salvation.
Among the unpublished writings (cod. lat. monac. 13097, in B.’s own hand), the 29 homiliae in Ezechielam prophetam are noteworthy. Others are known to us only from ancient catalogues. The De miraculis s. Dei genitricis Mariae (often copied; published by B. Pez in 1731, then prohibited and confiscated; republished by Th. T. Crane, London 1927) is spurious; only chap. 37 is an authentic addition by the copyist B.
