Berengoz of Trier

BERENGOZ DI TREVIRI

BERENGOZ OF TRIER. - Benedictine abbot of St. Maximin, to whose benefit he devoted himself by reclaiming from Henry V various rights and possessions; died around 1125. He distinguished himself as a man of letters, leaving, besides 5 Sermones

(panegyrics for the feast of martyrs, confessors, of the dedication and of the relics) two works: De laude et inventione sanctae crucis libri 3; De mysterio ligni dominici et de luce visibili et invisibili per quam antiqui patres olim meruerunt illustrari (PL 160, 935-1036). The latter exalts Christ, « lux vera » since the dawn of the human race, in the Old and New Testament; it also sheds light on a theme, then of great topicality: the harmonious relations between priesthood and empire, possible in the Rex-Sacerdos Christ. The former sets out 3 figures of the Cross (Joseph, Isaac, Moses), its invention and efficacy, in the life of St. Helena « Treviorum quondam indigena civitatis » (ibid. 953) and of Constantine.
