BENEDICTINES OF SAINT GERTRUDE. - In 1850 some monasteries of the B. in the United States, which lived independently and autonomously, began a movement of union into religious congregations sui iuris with the permission of the various ordinaries and with the approval of the superiors. Thus arose the Congregation of St. Gertrude at Yankton, diocese of Sioux Falls, and in 1920 at Leavenworth the American one of St. Scholastica. The religious observe the Rule of St. Benedict with their own constitutions and devote themselves to teaching and to works of charity in hospitals and nursing homes. They number respectively 46 and 160 houses with 500 and about 2000 religious.
