BENEDICTINES OF SAINT GERTRUDE. — In 1850, several monasteries of the Benedictines in the United States, which were living independently and autonomously, began a movement toward union into religious congregations *sui iuris* with the permission of the various ordinaries and with the approval of their superiors. Thus arose the Congregation of Saint Gertrude at Yankton, in the diocese of Sioux Falls, and in 1920 at Leavenworth the American Congregation of Saint Scholastica. The sisters follow the Rule of Saint Benedict with their own constitutions and are engaged in teaching and works of charity in hospitals and care facilities. They number respectively 46 and 160 houses with 500 and about 2,000 sisters.
