Benedictines of Saint Gertrude

BENEDETTINE DI SANTA GELTRUDE. — In 1850, several monasteries of the B. in the United States, which lived independently and autonomously, began a movement toward union in sui iuris religious congregations, with the permission of the various ordinaries and the approval of their superiors. Thus arose the Congregation of s. Geltrude at Yankton, in the diocese of Sioux Falls, and, in 1920 at Leavenworth, the American Congregation of S. Scolastica. The religious observe the Rule of s. Benedetto with their own constitutions and devote themselves to teaching and to charitable works in hospitals and nursing homes. They number, respectively, 46 and 160 houses, with 500 and approximately 2,000 religious.
