BERARDI, CARLO SEBASTIANO. – Canonist, born at Oneglia on 26 Aug. 1719, died in 1768. After studying theology with the Scolopi in Savona, he was ordained priest and devoted himself to legal studies in Turin, where in 1745 he became a member of the college of jurists. In 1749 he became prefect of the faculty of law and in 1754 professor of *utriusque iuris*. He contributed effectively to the development of canon law with his commentary, written with a keenly scientific and practical sense. As a critical investigator of sources, he left works of great value.
He wrote: *Commentaria in ius ecclesiasticum universum* (Turin 1766 ff.; 4 vols., Venice 1778–89; Loreto 1847); *Institutiones iuris ecclesiastici* (2 vols., Turin 1789); *Gratiani canones genuini ab apocryphis discreti, corrupti ad emendatorum codicum fidem exarati, difficiliores commoda interpretatione illustrati* (ibid. 1752–57; 4 vols., Venice 1783); *De variis sacrorum canonum collectionibus dissertationum sylloge* (I, ibid. 1778, pp. 687–722).
