BERARDI, CARLO SEBASTIANO. - Canonist, b. at Oneglia on 26 Aug. 1719, d. in 1768. After studying theology with the Piarists at Savona, he was ordained priest and devoted himself to legal studies in Torino, where, in 1745, he became a member of the college of jurists. In 1749 he became prefect of the faculty of law and in 1754 professor utriusque iuris. He contributed effectively to the development of canonical science through his commentary, written with an exquisitely scientific and practical approach. As a critical investigator of sources, he left works of great value.
He wrote: Commentaria in ius ecclesiasticum universum (Torino 1766 ff.; 4 vols., Venezia 1778-89; Loreto 1847); Institutiones iuris ecclesiastici (2 vols., Torino 1789); Gratiani canones genuini ab apocryphis discret, corrupti ad emendatorum codicum fidem exarati, difficiliores commoda interpretatione illustrati (ibid. 1752-57; 4 vols., Venezia 1783); De variis sacrorum canonum collectionibus dissertationum sylloge (I, ibid. 1778, pp. 687-722).
