BERNARDO da CASTELVETERE. - Capuchin preacher and ascetical writer, b. at Caulonia (formerly Castelvetere, province of Reggio Calabria) in 1708, d. in 1756. He was provincial definitor, lecturer in theology, popular preacher, and a much sought-after spiritual director.

Of his Direttorio mistico per li confessori (Venice [S. Occhi] 1750) twenty-two editions are known, two of them in Spanish. St. Alphonsus Liguori thought very highly of the Direttorio and made extensive use of it in his works. B., unlike few other authors of his time, does not polemicize against Quietist errors, perhaps because he judged that they had no resonance among the class of his readers.
