BERNARDO da CASTELVETERE. - Capuchin preacher and ascetical writer, b. at Caulonia (formerly Castelvetere, province of Reggio Calabria) in 1708, d. in 1756. He was provincial definitor, lecturer in theology, popular preacher, and sought-after spiritual director.
Twenty-two editions are known of his Direttorio mistico per li confessori (Venice [S. Occhi] 1750), including two in Spanish. S. Alfonso de' Liguori held the Direttorio in high esteem and made extensive use of it in his works. B., unlike few other authors of his time, does not engage in polemic against Quietist errors, perhaps because he considered that they had no resonance among his readership.
