BERNARD OF LUXEMBOURG. - Controversialist
and Dominican inquisitor, b. at Strassen in the 15th century,
d. at Cologne on 6 Oct. 1535. In 1516 he graduated
at Paris and from that time appears among the
professors at Cologne, of whose convent he was repeatedly
prior. At Cologne, Mainz, and Trier he carried out for several
years the office of inquisitor.
His writings are numerous and cover the most varied subjects,
from those of devotion to hagiographical ones, from historical
to polemical and apologetical works. His principal work: *Catalogus haereticorum*, 2 vols., n.p., t.n., which from 1522 to 1537
had ten editions; this work completes that of N. Eymeric
(d. 1399) *Directorium inquisitorum*. Not overly
critical or exact, it was widely used for compiling the list of books
on the Index.
