BERNARD OF LUXEMBOURG. - Dominican controversialist and inquisitor, b. at Strassen in the 15th century and d. at Cologne on 6 Oct. 1535. In 1516 he took his degree at Paris, and from that time he appears among the professors of Cologne, of whose convent he was repeatedly prior. At Cologne, Mainz and Trier he discharged the office of inquisitor for various years.

His writings on the most disparate subjects are numerous, from devotional to hagiographic works, from historical to polemical and apologetic ones. His principal work: Catalogus haereticorum, 5 books, s. m. t., which from 1522 to 1537 had ten editions; it completes the work of N. Eymeric (d. 1399) Directorium inquisitorum. Not overly critical or exact, it was widely used for the compilation of the list of books on the Index.
