BENET, CYPRIAN. - Dominican writer, b. at Albeda (Aragon) around 1460 and d. between 1522 and 1530. Around 1500, for reasons of study, he was in Paris, where he took his degree and taught, then passing, in 1509, to Rome to the University of the Sapienza. In 1521 he delivered there a discourse against Luther, who was burned in effigy together with his works. Against the invading Lutheran errors of the time he validly defended the authority of the Church and of the Pontiff.

From him we have: Illustrium virorum opuscula (Paris 1500); De sacrosancto Eucharistiae Sacramento et de eiusdem ministro ad Julium II (s. n. t.); Tractatus quattuor: de prima orbis sede, de concilio, de ecclesiastica potestate, de pontificis maximis auctoritate (Rome 1512); De non mutando paschate (ibid. 1515); Aculeus contra Judaeus (ibid. 1515); Dialogus de excellentia et utilitate theologiae (ibid. 1518); De Caroli I regis Hispaniarum, postea Caesaris ac Imperatoris V, praecemientia et clementia (ibid. 1518).
