BERTOLDI, CARLO MICHELE. - Missionary, b. at Valperga (Piedmont), 20 Oct. 1660; a Jesuit on 9 July 1681, he embarked in 1697 for India. Assigned in 1702 to the Madura mission, he had charge for 35 years of the pangu (a quasi-parish) of Aour, near Trichinopoly, where he died on 10 March 1740.

He seems to have been the initiator, in Madura, of collective spiritual retreats, to which he gave great development (a report of his from 1719 on the subject is printed by J. Bertrand, La Mission du Maduré, IV, Paris 1854, pp. 262-70; reproduced by Besse together with another in La pratique des Exercices). A work by B. in the Tamil language, Gnana muyartchi (1727), an exposition of the first week of the Exercises of St. Ignatius, was printed at Pondichéry in 1843.
