BOBO-DIULASSO, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of - The mission arose as an apostolic prefecture in Dec. 1927 with territories detached from the immense vicariates of Bamako and Ouagadougou (French West Africa), and still measures 102,920 sq. km. in area, with a population that does not reach one million, made up, besides a few hundred Europeans, of an agglomeration of different races, without any one being predominant. Hence the multiplicity of dialects, which represents one of the principal difficulties of the apostolate.

The prefecture was entrusted to the pp. Bianchi. In 1935 it counted 8,857 Catholics, distributed in 10 primary and 60 secondary stations; in 1937 it was elevated to an apostolic vicariate and in 1939 it had the first indigenous priest, while the first Franciscan Missionaries of Mary arrived, settling at Dissen, among the Dagari. In this same year the mission took part in the trade fair of the Ivory Coast, promoted by the colonial government. In 1947, with a part of its territory, the apostolic prefecture of Sikasso (v.) was erected.

According to the statistics of 1947, indigenous Catholics number 17,728, foreign and mixed 975, catechumens 2,505. Dissidents 53, Protestants ca. 500, Muslims ca. 80,000, pagans 828,000. Quasi-parishes 6, primary stations 4, secondary 84. Elementary schools 14 with 1,291 pupils, craft schools 2
