BOURBON, Carlo di. - B. around 1433 to Charles I, Duke of Bourbon, d. at Lyon on 13 Sept. 1488. At the age of eleven he was appointed in 1444 archbishop of Lyon by the canons of the Cathedral, but his appointment was not confirmed until Dec. 1446; he did not take over the governance of the diocese, however, until 1447. He was created cardinal in Dec. 1476 at the request of Louis XI, to whom the B. remained almost always attached; from him he received rich and numerous benefices and was made governor of Paris, where he won affection. At Lyon he had the facade of the Cathedral built.
