BOSTIUS, ARNOLD. – Flemish Carmelite (descended from the noble Van Vaernewijk family, lords of Borst; he Latinized his name as Bostius). Born in Ghent in 1445, he died there on 4 April 1499. One of the most eminent men of his Order for virtue and learning, he was the driving force behind the humanist movement among the Carmelites in the second half of the fifteenth century. Always in contact with the great humanists of his age, through his works he contributed significantly to a revival of the study of the history of his Order.
Among his works, the following deserve mention: De illustribus viris Ordinis BVM. de M. Carmelo (edited by Daniel a V. M. in Speculum Carm., II [Antwerp 1680], pp. 886–96); Speculum historiale (ms. in the Biblioteca Nazionale di Brera, Milan); De patronatu B. Virg. Mariae (edited by Daniel a V.
