BOLSEC, JÉRÔME-HERMÈS. - Carmelite theologian, b. in Paris, d. 4, name in 1585. He abandoned the Order and fled to Ferrara, where for some time he was chaplain to the duchess Renata. In 1550 he adhered to Calvin, with whom he formed a friendship in Geneva, and practiced medicine. When that friendship later broke down because he had declared himself against the doctrine of predestination, he was imprisoned by order of Calvin, then banished from Geneva as an infamous impostor and apostate. To escape that man's persecutions he took refuge in France, working as a physician, and in the city of Autun he abjured his errors, taking his stand against the reformers.
In 1562 he had published: Le miroir, envoyé de Vérité au Roi concerning the reform of the Church, which is a brief pamphlet; Histoire de la vie, moeurs, actes, doctrine, constance et mort de Jean Calvin (Lyons 1577), dedicated to the archbishop of Lyons; Histoire de la vie, moeurs, doctrine et deportement de Th. de Bèze (Paris 1582).
