BRADLEY, FRANCIS HERBERT. - English philosopher, b. at Glasbury (Wales) on 30 Jan. 1846 and d. at Oxford on 18 Sept. 1924. He is the last representative of that idealism which Coleridge had initiated in England and which had dominated throughout the 19th century. Intimate connections link this idealism with German thought, but it acquires an originality and vitality all its own, from which derive beneficial influences on the sensualism and positivism that accompany its development. B. carries it almost to skeptical expressions, placing true and absolute reality outside time and space and reducing human knowledge to the fictitious appearance of finite things. Principal works: Ethical Studies (London 1876); Appearance and reality (ibid. 1893); Essays on Truth and Reality (Oxford 1914).
