BRAGADINO, MARCANTONIO. - Born in 1523 into a well-known Venetian patrician family. He is found in Cyprus in 1570 as a military captain, when war between Venice and the Turks was expected, and the latter attacked the island of Cyprus. After Nicosia fell on 9 September after a strenuous defense, B. concentrated the defense at Famagusta, assisted by Astorre Baglioni, Nestore Martinengo and other captains in the pay of Venice. The resistance lasted from May until 30 July 1571, when, reduced to the last extremity, B. had to surrender. The Turkish captain Mustafā, however, broke the terms of the agreement, took the commanders prisoner, of whom some managed to escape and the others he killed. He tried in vain to induce B. to apostasy; in August he had him flayed alive and carried his stuffed skin around as a trophy. The glorious remains were later recovered and laid to rest in the church of S. Paolo in Venice.
