Brandl, Petr

BRANDL, PETR. - Painter, b. in 1688 in Prague, d. in 1739 in Kutná Hora. Through the study of the Italian Caravaggisti and naturalists, completed by that of the works of Rembrandt and Rubens, he arrived at a style of his own, which made him one of the founders of the Bohemian Baroque.

His principal works are: Joseph Finds His Brothers in Egypt (Jindřichův Hradec), The Death of the Prophet Elijah (Prague), The Most Holy Trinity (Kutná Hora), The Last Supper (Košice), Christ on the Cross (Prague, church of St. Bartholomew), The Assumption of Mary (ibid., church of St. James), Death of St. Barbara (Manětín), Glory of St. Ignatius of Loyola (Hradec Králové), St. John the Evangelist (Prague, archiepiscopal residence), St. John the Baptist with St. Anthony the Hermit (Kličenice), The Death of Vintíř (Prague, Břevnov), All Saints (ibid., church of St. James).
