BRANDTS, FRANZ. - Sociologist and industrialist, b. at München-Gladbach on 12 Nov. 1834, d. there on 5 Oct. 1914. He has the merit of having promoted the textile industry in the Rhineland and of having been among the first to place the solution of social problems in Germany on a practical footing. With the Arbeiterwohl association he posed in concrete terms the problem of improving the conditions of workers, influencing in this direction the authorities, the press and above all the leaders and organizations of German Catholicism. When in 1890 the "Volksverein für das katholische Deutschland" (Association of the People of Catholic Germany) was created, with its center at München-Gladbach, B. was its first president. He fought decisively against the spirit of the Manchesterian doctrine, upholding in its place an advanced patriarchalism. In his factories he created a model organization on behalf of the workers, in order to make the workers themselves, in the course of time, participate in the administration of the social affairs of the enterprise.
