BRAUN, JOHANN KARL. - Priest, supporter of popular education and social uplift in Alsace, b. at Gebweiler on 20 July 1820, d. at Einsiedeln (Switzerland) on 24 June 1877. B. is particularly noted for the activity he carried out in favor of the education of young people, the care of orphans and the development of educational literature for the people. His greatest merit, however, lies in having founded a German press for the Catholics of Alsace. He was himself a writer and is distinguished by the nobility with which he uses the popular style and by his refined taste. Among the works he published, his research on German legends are worthy of mention.
