Braun, Johann Karl. – Priest, advocate of popular education and social uplift in Alsatia, b. at Gebweiler on 20 July 1820, d. at Einsiedeln (Switzerland) on 24 June 1877. Braun is especially noted for his labors in behalf of the education of youth, the care of orphans, and the development of educational literature for the people. His greatest merit, however, lies in having founded a German press for the Catholics of Alsatia. He was himself a writer and is distinguished by the nobility with which he employs the popular style and by his refined taste. Among the works he published worthy of mention are his researches into German legends.
