BRAUN, JOHANN KARL. – Priest, advocate of popular education and social advancement in Alsace, born in Gebweiler on 20 July 1820, died in Einsiedeln (Switzerland) on 24 June 1877. B. is particularly known for the work he carried out in favor of the education of young people, the care of orphans, and the development of educational literature for the people. His greatest merit, however, lies in having founded a German press for the Catholics of Alsace. He was himself a writer and is distinguished by the nobility with which he employs the popular style and by his refined taste. Among the works he published, his studies on German legends deserve mention.
