JOHANN ALEXANDER BRASsICANUS (Köln). — Catholic humanist, born in 1500 and died in Vienna in 1539. His family was from Constance and bore the name Köll (cabbage, a name which he Latinized as B.). A very celebrated humanist in his time and one of the most distinguished members of the Viennese circle, he openly declared himself for Catholicism against Luther, especially after his studies on the Holy Fathers, of whom he published in particular Salvian’s *De gubernatione Dei* (1530) and Gennadius’s *De sinceritate christianae fidei dialogus* (1530).
