Brassicanus, Johann Alexander

BRASSICANUS, JOHANN ALEXANDER. - Catholic humanist, b. in 1500 and d. in Vienna in 1539. His family was from Constance and was called Köll (cabbage, a name he Latinized as B.). A humanist very famous in his time and one of the most distinguished of the Viennese circle, he declared himself openly for Catholicism against Luther, especially following his studies on the Holy Fathers, of whom he published in particular Salvian's De gubernatione Dei (1530) and Gennadius's De sinceritate christiana fidei dialogus (1530).
