Brockhmand, Jesper Rasmussen

BROCKHMAND, JESPER RASMUSSEN. - Leader of the school of Lutheran theology in Denmark, from 1620 he was a professor at Copenhagen and from 1638 bishop of Seeland.

His boldest theological contribution was that Systema universae theologiae (1638), with which he largely revolutionized the traditional Lutheran conception of Justification by asserting that the sole cause of it is the bond interceding between Christ and the soul, a bond that is realized in the Mystical Union.

He also wrote a work of controversy in three parts: Controversiarum sacrarum (1626-28), of which the third, Ἀνερόπολας pontificatus, is a detailed refutation of the arguments adduced by St. R. Bellarmine against Luther; and the Epistome systematis theologiae (1649).
