BROCKHMAND, JESPER RASMUSSEN. - Leading figure in Lutheran theology in Denmark, from 1620 he was a professor in Copenhagen and from 1638 bishop of Seeland.
His most daring theological contribution was his Systema universae theologiae (1638), with which he largely revolutionized the traditional Lutheran conception of Justification by asserting that the sole cause of justification is the bond between Christ and the soul, a bond realized in the mystical union.
He also wrote a three-part polemical work, Controversiarum sacrarum (1626–28), of which the third part, Ἀκρόπολις pontificatus, is a particular refutation of the arguments advanced by St. Robert Bellarmine against Luther; and the Epitome systematis theologiae (1649).
