BRODA (BRED), ANDREAS. - Theologian. The place and date of his birth are unknown; he died in Leipzig in 1427. He completed his studies at the University of Prague, where he took his doctorate in theology in 1388, later becoming its vice-chancellor.
He was summoned by the archbishop to be part of the commission of scholars charged with expressing their judgment on the doctrine of Wyclif. He likewise attacked Hus, and indeed took part as a witness in the trial of the heresiarch conducted by the Council of Constance. Against James of Misa, who maintained that Communion under both kinds was necessary for the laity, he wrote: Contra communionem plebis sub utraque specie (Prague 1415). There also survive by him: Tractatus de corpore Christi contra Wicleff (ibid. 1411); Contra obiectus Hussitarum; De origine Hussitarum; Sermo Sinodalis (ibid. 1413) and a letter to Hus from 1414.
