BRODA (BRED), ANDREAS. — Theologian. His place and date of birth are unknown; he died at Leipzig in 1427. He completed his studies at the University of Prague, where he earned a doctorate in theology in 1388 and subsequently became vice-chancellor.
He was summoned by the archbishop to serve on the commission of scholars tasked with rendering judgment on the doctrine of Wyclif. Likewise, he attacked Hus and even participated as a witness in the trial of the heresiarch conducted by the Council of Constance. Against James of Misa, who maintained that Communion under both kinds was necessary for the laity, he wrote: *Contra communionem plebis sub utraque specie* (Prague 1415). Among his surviving works are: *Tractatus de corpore Christi contra Wieleff* (ibid. 1411); *Contra obiectus Husiitarum*; *De origine Husiitarum*; *Sermo Sodalis* (ibid. 1413); and a letter to Hus from 1414.
