BRODA (BRED), ANDREAS. — Theologian. The place and date of his birth are unknown; he died at Leipzig in 1427. He completed his studies at the University of Prague, where he received his degree in theology in 1388, subsequently becoming its vice-chancellor.
He was summoned by the archbishop to join the commission of scholars charged with expressing their judgment on Wyclif’s doctrine. He likewise attacked Hus; indeed, he par-
ticipated as a witness in the trial conducted against the heresiarch by the Council of Constance. Against Giacomo di Misa, who maintained that Communion under both kinds was necessary for the laity, he wrote: Contra communionem plebis sub utraque specie (Prague, 1415). The following works by him also survive: Tractatus de corpore Christi contra Wicleff (there, 1411); Contra obiectus Hussitarum; De origine Hussitarum; Sermo Sinodalis (there, 1413); and a letter to Hus from 1414.
